# Visits and visitor journeys

> Every visit to your sites in the last 30 days, how each page was used, and one person's whole journey: pages, clicks, goals and chats.

![Visits: a table of the last 30 days' visits with their path, pages, source, place and device](https://aura.oneinfer.ai/docs/images/visits.webp "Visits, demo data")

## The visit log

Each row is one visit: the **Visitor**, when it **Started**, the **Path** from landing page to last page, how many **Pages**, where they **Came from**, **Where** they were and their **Device**. Badges show who is online now and who chatted.

Narrow the list by:

- a name, email or your site's id for someone ("Visitors your site names");
- bot;
- the last 30 days, 7 days, 24 hours or today;
- whether they chatted.

**Show crawlers and link checkers** includes search engine crawlers and visits that never showed a sign of a person, such as email security tools that open links and leave. Insights never counts these.

## A visit

Choose a visit to see:

- where they came from, including campaign tags, their place, device, language, time zone and bot;
- every page, in order;
- **How they used each page**: active time, how far they scrolled, how long it took to load, rage clicks, dead clicks and errors, and what they clicked;
- **Goals and events** they reached, marked "after chatting" when the chat came first.

## A visitor's journey

**Their journey** shows everything one person did on your site, oldest first: each visit's pages, clicks, goals and chats in one timeline.

### How it went

The top of a journey sums it up, so you don't have to read every click:

- **A smooth visit**, **Some friction** or **A rough visit**, from what Aura measured.
- **What got in their way**:
  - pages that were slow to show or to respond to a click, against Google's thresholds;
  - browser errors, with the message;
  - rage clicks (the same spot clicked again and again), naming what was clicked;
  - clicks that did nothing.
- **What they did**: where they came from, the page they spent longest on, goals reached, their chats and how they went, and where they left.
- **Their path, page by page**: each visit as a row of pages. A page's width is the time they were active on it, and its colour says how it went. A dot marks a chat, a diamond a goal.

**See it**, or a page in the path, takes you to that page in the timeline.

### Ask the AI what it adds up to

**Read their journey** has your bot's model read the journey and say:

- what they did, in a few sentences;
- what they most likely came for;
- what got in their way;
- one thing to do next, such as fixing a button or following up on their chat.

It's sent pages, time on each, clicks, errors, page speed, goals and chat summaries, but no names, emails or ids. Each reading costs about a cent of OneInfer credits. The last reading stays on the page. Reading again before anything new happened gives the same reading at no cost. It's deleted with the visits it read.

### Each page

Each page shows the time they were active on it and how far they scrolled. Below that:

- badges for any trouble on it, such as "slow to show (5.2 s)" or "3 browser errors";
- the error messages, with the file and line;
- what they clicked: the first few clicks, and every rage or dead click (**Show all** lists the rest).

![A journey's last visit: the checkout page with its trouble badges, the error, the clicks and the chat](https://aura.oneinfer.ai/docs/images/journey.webp "A visitor's journey, demo data")

- Search for a page or a click, and show or hide **Clicks**, **Goals and events** and **Chats**.
- **Only pages with trouble** shows just the pages with errors, slow loading, or rage or dead clicks.
- **Their heatmap** on any page draws only this person's clicks on your page.

Page speed, errors and clicks are measured when **Measure how your pages are used** is on, in the bot's **Go live** step under **Analytics**.

A journey covers up to 50 visits from the last 30 days and up to 20 chats from the last 12 months.

### How visits join into one journey

Aura joins visits only through what it's been given, never by IP address:

| Joined by | When |
|---|---|
| Their chat | Once they've chatted, their browser keeps a token. |
| Your site's id for them | When your site passes `data-visitor-id` or calls `Aura.setVisitor`. Not verified. |
| Their browser's anonymous id | Only on bots with **Recognise returning visitors** on. |

Without any of these, a visit is a journey of one: the visitor isn't recognised the next day.

### Recognise returning visitors

In your bot's **Go live** step, under **Analytics**, **Recognise returning visitors** keeps a random id in each visitor's browser for 30 days, so all their visits join up even if they never chat or sign in. It's off by default.

> [!IMPORTANT]
> In the EU and UK this usually needs the visitor's consent. Turn it on only if your cookie banner covers analytics. The Privacy text on **Go live** adds a line about it.

## How long visits are kept

Visits, their pages and clicks are kept for 30 days, then deleted. Chats are kept 12 months. Insights keeps daily totals, which hold no visitor ids. See [Privacy](https://aura.oneinfer.ai/docs/privacy).
